The Mandate of the Atikokan Mining Attraction:

  • To preserve, present and celebrate the mining history of the Atikokan area, emphasizing not only the project but the people involved;
  • To educate about the impact of the mines on the area;
  • To enhance and encourage the tourist industry in Atikokan;
  • To strengthen Atikokan's economic future;
  • To link with other Northwestern Ontario attractions;
  • To emphasize how the environment, once mined, is returning to its natural state.

    The Atikokan Mining Attraction Association (AMAA) is a not-for-profit organization which began in 1987. Its strength and success are a testament to the long-term dedication of its volunteers.

    AMAA, through thousands of hours of volunteer talent and labour, along with the help of grants and donations, lists among its accomplishments:
    • placement of six large mining artifacts which have led to the creation of mini-parks in Atikokan's downtown area;
    • improvement of the highway visitors' centre;
    • creation of six large, historical murals on the sides of local businesses;
    • a building housing displays of artifacts, mannequins, photographs, diagrams, maps and minerals;
    • creation and hanging of banners celebrating the mining history of Steep Rock Iron Mines;
    • creation of the Miners' Wall of Pride;
    • original paintings, souvenirs, notecards.
